Bryce Canyon by Tony Farley

I spent most of Spring Break at Bryce Canyon, Utah.  What a crazy extraterrestrial place!  I’ve never seen anything like it or even close.  I shot tons of footage for a Beautiful Places episode.  I just couldn’t stop shooting.  Everywhere I looked, there were amazing rock formations, colored dirt and sand, and a beautiful blue sky.

Bryce is one of those places that just overwhelms your senses.  Your mind just cannot take in all the textures, shapes, and color.  You just sit and look at it like it’s a painting that cannot be real.  But it’s real, and you need to hike down into the hoodoos to really get a feel for Bryce.  When you are standing among them and looking up at them, you stand in awe.

I was lucky to find a little path off trail that took me to a set of hills that placed me right in the center of an amphitheater of hoodoos in every direction.  I sat and ate lunch in amazement at the site around me.  I hope the video I took does the place justice.

My friends Rick and Mary were on a tour through S. Utah and met up with me the second night there.  We had a great campfire.  The next day we hiked together along the Queen’s Garden trail.  I left the video camera behind and brought my still camera.  The shot above is one of the stills.  I’m glad I had the chance to do some still photos, although plenty of times throughout the day I wished I had the video camera.  Rick and I went back to Queens Garden the next day and hiked down before the sun rose.  When the sun broke above the horizon we were in amongst glowing orange, white, and pink hoodoos.  Perfect.
