Story

This image is from Mt. Rainier. I took it on the training day before the climb to the top. I climbed Mt. Rainier in 2006 and the climb changed my life. The challenge of climbing Rainier sent me on a path that lead to so much more outdoor hiking and backpacking that I just had not been doing before. I had to make it to the top. I worked hard at the gym and climbed many mountains to assure I would make it.

Along the way, I raised over $3500 for Bay Area Wilderness Training and got to know so many great people though that organization. I went back to Rainier last summer to film it for Beautiful Places. I didn’t climb to the top. I hiked around the mountain on many different trails and just soaked up the beauty with my eyes and camera.

Below is the Mt. Rainier: Paradise show. It was cloudy and raining all weekend. No views of the mountain at all. But I went out anyway with my rain gear. It got so bad I had to sit under some trees for a couple hours and just get out of the downpour. Around 2pm the clouds moved away and the beauty of Paradise came to life. Clouds still came through from time to time but then they were my friend because clouds pushing in around the peaks make perfect shots. This show and the other Rainier show took three trips to Washington to film, with some bad events keeping the shooting from being completed. But it all lead to me being there at that moment to capture the clouds falling over the ridge and the foggy meadow full of wildflowers. I’ll never complain about complications again.
