s is my favorite show to date. It was also one of my most memorable trips. When I’m going through rough times, I just mentally put myself there again, watching the sunset behind Delicate Arch, and I feel better. When I really need help, I watch this episode. As I go around to other places, and sometimes things don’t work out with the clouds, or rain, or heat, I just remember that sometimes things work out like they did at Arches. You just have to keep going and be there when the magic happens. North Dome was a similar experience.

The day was cloudy with a bit of rain. The hiking was great but there was no light all day. Just gloom without any promise of a good sunset. I took the hike out to Delicate Arch anyway, sticking to my plan to hike out there and catch the arch at sunset. On a gloomy and rainy day you can usually be assured that the crowds will be thin and the hike was just me hiking over the slickrock and enjoying the views. Perfect, but not for the show. I need light for the show. Not beating down noon light, but sun peaking through the clouds light. So a cloudy day can sometimes break up and become a great day. And clouds always make a great sunset if they break up a bit and let the light through.
So there I was, sitting there eating while looking at Delicate Arch when the clouds broke up and the light was magical. The surrounding sandstone lit up orange and I was scrambling for my camera, running around getting every shot I could. I calmed down, set up the camera to do a time lapse, and left it alone while the show started. I took still pictures while my video camera took its time lapse and this is one of them. The above shot is actually a stitched together panorama of about nine shots. The clouds turned every color and came right from the sun’s direction. I knew I had one of those golden shots. Then it was over. The sun was down and I had a couple miles to hike. I sat around soaking it all up and then packed up for the hike back to the car.
A perfect trip. Have you had a similar experience? Tell me about it.
